From big city to small town USA

Published by butterflyharmon at 4:36 pm under Smalltown, USA Edit This

Chincoteague, VaMoved from an innercity 45 min outside of NYC to an island in Virginia. So here are my tales about smalltown USA. Chincoteague island, Va.

Since this is my first blog I will tell you a little about myself. I am a 38 year old mother of 2, my son is 14 and lives in NH so unfortunately I will not be blogging about him much. My daughter is 3 and lives with me. I have bipolar which is a whole blog within itself.

Lets back track a little. We moved from an innercity of sorts called Poughkeepsie NY which is very crime ridden. One night in October I was watching TV and heard “bang bang” and low and behold a few minutes later police where out there. Enough is enough I said and decided I could not live there anymore. So I started researching online for other places to live. First it was Maine, but that is way too cold for me. So I started looking along the coast line and saw Ocean City MD. started looking into there but there seems to be alot of crime and fights. So I placed an ad on Craigslist looking for an apt. I recieved an email about a whole house but it was located in Chincoteague Va. So I started researching it and only found 2 websites about it.

Now all I had to do is get Christian on board, Virginia he thought that is very redneck dont you think? But when I started to tell him its not virginia virginia but its on a peninsula that is right on the Maryland border he was a bit more agreeable. But being a city boy what really hooked him in was the fishing, crabbing and clamming that can be done in the warmer months.

So we had everything planned. Do his taxes before we leave, get the refund and go. Did that happen. Heck no, H&R Block is a load of BS. So we were told it would be on the card on the 13th. so we decided to move down and get the money then. so on Febuary 4, 2009 our adventure began.

Myself, my husband Christian and our daughter Cassandra started our new life with all our worldly posessions in the back of a uhaul. The house we rented was furnished so it was kind of easy with the uhaul nothing too heavy to suck too much gas. We made it thru to meet our landlady to give us the keys at a Wawa store. down here its like a 7-11, she said she fixed the heat and everything is set. Well she put the air on not the heat so it was FREEZING when we got in at 1a.m. but we made it.

The first day here we met our next door neighbors, “islanders” they call themselves. They seemed very nice and kind. Our Landlady told us about them stating they were “nosy” which we didnt take heed to, which we should. Just taking a walk around the block we see horses in peoples back yards! yes horses, not a farm or anything, right next to the dollar general 2 horses. it was amazing for my daughter who has never seen one before.

I will end this blog on this final note Our first night here was so quiet that we couldnt sleep. now that is paradise. more to come later.
